Canadian network SPACE http://www.spacecast.com has scheduled the new Doctor Who episodes for Saturdays 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacfic starting 17 April, the same day as BBC America's http://www.bbcamerica.com premiere (BBC America has not given a time slot yet). SPACE will presumably air the episodes the same week as BBC America, so episodes are likely to be about 2 weeks behind the UK until either BBC One takes a week off (shortening the gap) or BBC America and SPACE take a week off (lengthening the gap).

There are claims that ABC in Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv will start
the new Doctor Who in April, which would make it the shortest gap for
Australia for regular episodes yet. However, ABC has not said anything
publicly, and no date is out, so don't schedule time off work or plan
parties yet.

I have a theory on BBC America's decision to start Doctor Who on 17 April
instead of the 3 April date that everyone assumes BBC One in the UK will
use. The theory is that there is no circumstance where BBC America will air
a new Doctor Who episode on the 3rd of July.

If BBC One premieres Doctor Who as expected on 3 April and opts to air all
13 episodes without a gap, the run would conclude on Saturday 26 June. This
would probably be fine for BBC America. But if BBC One takes a week off for
Eurovision, or because a sports game is in an inconvenient slot, then the
series will go across 3 July, and we would have a problem.

As long as I have paid attention to BBC America, the network has avoided
airing new dramas, comedies, or reality shows from around 3 July to 5 July,
due to the American Independence Day holiday on 4 July. People will be
traveling, people will be partying, and TV ratings will be below normal. BBC
America is not going to take the chance that they could be airing either
part of the series finale on that date.

The 17 April start date ensures that BBC America will air, at most, 11
episodes through 26 June (possibly 10 - some years they don't air new shows
on Memorial Day weekend, so we could get a gap on 29 May). BBC America can
then air a repeat or something on 3 July and air the last 2 or 3 episodes
starting 10 July, away from the weekend they fear.

Most broadcast and cable networks in the US try not to air new episodes of
regular programming that weekend either. This isn't just a BBC America
phobia.

Anyway, the new episodes are getting closer. Anticipation is building. But
there are still many Doctor Who episodes already airing on TV now. If not, I
wouldn't have a column to write. So back to business ...
